There’s a lot more to interior design than simply picking out the latest trends in home decor. Design principles are also used to make the atmosphere of your home spacious and welcoming, and to make your home livable in a practical way.

 In spite of the fact that most people will own a home someday, no one is ever really taught interior design. So, it comes as little surprise that so many people are missing out on simple techniques that can drastically improve their home.

 In today’s article, we’re going to share with you some of the best interior design and decorating secrets to help you spruce up your home and make it more practical at the same time.

Low ceiling? No problem

Having a low ceiling can make it difficult to decorate and make your home seem spacious. One great workaround is to avoid tall furniture and seek out chairs with low backs, and bookcases that are wide rather than tall.

Omit hanging lights and ceiling fans and used recessed lighting instead to maximize your space and avoid having taller guests having to dodge objects hanging from the ceiling.

Finally, paint the ceiling white and remove crown molding to give the impression of openness.

Making small rooms feel larger

If you have a small home it can feel difficult to keep things uncluttered while still making sure you have everything you need. There are a few ways to make rooms feel more spacious that don’t involve throwing out your belongings.

First, add mirrors to give the illusion (literally) of space. A single or group of mirrors can be a nice decorative touch that makes a room seem much larger than it is.

Next, paint and decorate with mainly light colors or white. Dark colors will make a room feel smaller.

Lastly, take advantage of hidden storage space, such as tables with drawers underneath, and avoid putting decorations on too many surfaces. Filling the room up with objects will make it appear smaller.

The size of decorations matter

There’s a rule in interior decorating called the “cantaloupe rule.” It states that you should avoid using decorations that are smaller than a cantaloupe.

However, that doesn’t mean this rule can’t be artfully broken. A better description would be that you should omit several small decorations in favor of just a few large ones.  

Create a color palette

When choosing the color of your furniture, walls, and decoration it can be easy to just choose whichever color you like for that object rather than what works well in your home. Try making a color palette to adhere to when shopping for these items.

Create a house-wide palette and a palette for each room. Stick to three or four colors that complement each other well for each room, and make sure they aren’t too starkly contrasted from other rooms in your home.

Evidence of this is reflected in the rising numbers of Americans who make up the gig economy. It's also reflected in the numbers of people who are downsizing, ridding themselves of household clutter and opting for chic, modern or traditional interior designs that showcase their amazing personalities.

Get the space you want without moving to a new house

You don't have to buy or live in a tiny house to want to make a small home appear bigger than it actually is. A new addition to your family, gaining a roommate or the operating a business out of your home are reasons why you might want to expand your living space without moving. These tricks may be just what you're looking for.

  • Buy and install multi-purpose furniture. Instead of a traditional sofa, get a sofa that unfolds into a bed. Also, go with a sofa that has bottom shelves for added storage space.
  • Choose built-in wall bookcases. Four rows of wall bookcases can easily save you several square feet of floor space,especially if you consider how much space four large separate bookcases would take up.
  • Install interior doors that also function as tables and storage shelves. These devices are interchangeable by removing and inserting clamps into levers.
  • Choose transformable furniture. These furniture pieces save money and space. An example of transformable furniture is a table that doubles as a chair. You may have to visit specialty furniture stores to find transforming furniture pieces.
  • Make good use of vertical space. Stack decorative storage bins on top of each other rather than shoving them in closets or placing them in or near the middle of a floor.
  • Keep end tables close to chairs and sofas.
  • Use tables that fold into chairs and rely on stylish ceiling lights for lighting. During the day, rely on natural light.
  • Install removable dividers to turn a single room into a multi-purpose space. Go with dividers that are made with elegant designs.
  • Purchase twin, bunk beds that fold away when not in use.
  • Turn your attic into a master bedroom. Make sure that air flow and insulation in the attic is good, allowing the attic to easily heat and cool.
  • Screen your front or back porch. Place chairs and a sofa on the porch and use the space as an outdoor office or socializing area.
  • Donate furniture and objects that you don't use to charities and community organizations.

A large house still serves as a sign of success in many communities. Other Americans are focusing on houses that are highly functional, whether that functionality comes through floor plans or solar energy. One thing is certain. Individual living space preferences are helping to reshape the housing market. It is exciting to watch the impact that those preferences are making.

It's probably safe to assume that at some point in our lives we have looked at a room in a magazine and wished our own home could look just like that. Unlike magazines, however, we don’t have the luxury of having a professional design team putting in hours of their time to make each room on our house look perfectly put together. However, we still find ourselves wishing ours could look just a little bit more polished like the ones in the glossy pages lining drugstore shelves. Below are some tips you can use to add a designer’s touch to your own home without having to hire one: Three's a charm - choose three colors and/or shades you will use throughout the room. You will want one as your main color, one as an accent and another for a minor accent. If you tend to be drawn to all warm or cool shades, use the opposite tone as an accent color to restore balance to your color palette. Texture - mixing up textures will add more depth and visual interest to your room. Fur, tufting, velvet, tile and wood-grain and wainscotting are all classic ways to add texture to a room Balance - strike a balance within your room by mixing large and small or bulky and delicate furniture together. By mixing pieces with varying structures your room will feel less cookie cutter and more curated. It's all in the details - bowls, baskets, and trays throughout a room add a thoughtful touch while offering alternative storage. Added bonus: this is also a great way to add more texture to a room. Get artsy - adding unique artwork to a room adds the professional touch you are looking for. This can easily be done at home and even a project that can be done with children. All you need is some paint and a few canvases to paint abstract shapes on to. Everything in its place - avoid clutter taking over counters by giving everything a dedicated place. Homes in magazines spreads have the upper hand in that they are not actually lived in. Having a day of the week where you go through your home to ensure everything is either in its assigned place or given one will guarantee a neater, tidier home over time. The finishing touch - fresh-cut flowers add that certain something to a room. You are sure to find them in any given room found in the pages of a magazine. If your room seems to be missing something and you can't quite put your finger on it, a floral bouquet is probably the finishing touch you're looking for. While a perfect home can't be guaranteed, after all, we live in the real world and not one curated for a photo shoot, there are steps you can take to replicate those found in the glossy pages of magazines. Whether you switch up your furniture pieces to include a variety of shapes or add a DIY abstract painting you can easily add a designer touch to your own home!

Even if you’ve only lived at your address for several months, it’s likely that you’ve developed an emotional connection to your home. Despite a few hiccups like a pipe leaking, sink clogging or a kitchen cabinet drawer sticking, you might not be ready to sell your house and move into a new home. Renovating your house might prove a better choice. Consider the following factors before you make a final decision on whether to sell or renovate. Neighborhood – Is the neighborhood where you live starting to decline? Is crime increasing, causing property values to drop? It may be time to start house hunting and move into a better neighborhood. Renovating won’t change your entire neighborhood, so this decision is fairly straightforward. Family Needs – If your family is growing, you may need to move in order to give your children sleeping and entertaining room, especially if your children are getting older and want their own private space. You could also renovate and add one to two bedrooms onto your existing home. Age of House – An aging house often means that wiring, pipes and flooring are experiencing wear and tear. If your home has ever flooded or endured hard weather conditions, renovating may call for a roof replacement, new sidewalks, new floor tiles and painting. As part of your renovations, you may also need to replace utility equipment like your water heater or furnace. Job Situation – Think about why you’re considering moving. The chance to work a job that you’re passionate about or the chance to continue working with your current employer who may be relocating to a different town may make it easy to decide to move. Compare the cost to renovate your home against the cost of taking on a new mortgage. Remember when relatives and friends visited after you bought your home, helping you to celebrate this new independent step? It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that you felt proud of your decision, a home choice that you made after weeks, perhaps months, of house hunting. Add in years of memories, children growing up in the house and huge family celebrations and moving might be the last thing that you want to do. On the other hand, moving could prove to be the best choice. Before you make a decision, consider the above factors. Doing so could help you to avoid entering the realm of regret.
